Boxing Day Dip Tradition on Portreath Beach

Every year on Boxing Day, brave souls gather on Portreath Beach, a stone’s throw from our cottages to take part in the Boxing Day Dip tradition.

This event has become a beloved tradition for locals and visitors alike, with participants donning their wackiest costumes and plunging into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The origins of the Boxing Day Dip are unclear, but it is believed to have started to shake off the excesses of Christmas and kickstart the new year with a sense of renewal and adventure. Regardless of its origins, the Boxing Day Dip has become a popular event that draws a large crowd of onlookers who gather on the beach to cheer on the brave swimmers.

Participants in the Boxing Day Dip often come dressed in elaborate costumes, with many choosing to wear fancy dress or themed outfits to add to the festive spirit of the event. Some may opt for traditional swimsuits or wetsuits, while others may choose more outlandish attire such as Santa Claus costumes, reindeer outfits, or even full-body animal suits.

As the countdown begins, the atmosphere on Portreath Beach crackles with excitement and anticipation. The swimmers line up at the water’s edge, shivering in the cold air, before taking the plunge into the frigid waters. The brave souls race into the sea, screaming and laughing as they dive under the crashing waves, their breath taken away by the shock of the icy water.

After the exhilarating dip, the participants emerge from the water, exhilarated and invigorated, their faces flushed with the thrill of the experience. They gather on the beach, huddling together for warmth, as onlookers applaud and cheer them on. Some may take a moment to catch their breath and soak up the atmosphere, while others may make a quick dash for their towels and warm clothes.

The Boxing Day Dip tradition on Portreath Beach is a fun and festive way to celebrate the holiday season and embrace the spirit of adventure. It is a reminder that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a leap of faith can lead to unforgettable experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.
