Christmas by the Sea in Portreath

Nestled on the rugged Cornish coast, Portreath becomes something quietly magical in the run-up to Christmas. Staying at Smugglers Cove Cottages means you’re perfectly placed for both the peaceful seaside atmosphere and a handful of special local events and trails to put you in the festive mood.

Here’s how to make the most of Christmas in and around Portreath this year.

For gifts, festive browsing and local craft finds, Portreath and its neighbours offer some charming options.

Just a short hop away you have the Cornwall Gold Christmas Market: 4-7 December 2025, 10 am–4 pm, with over 45 local stalls, free parking/entry.

A great place to find handcrafted gifts, Cornish-made specialities and so on.

When you’re staying at Smugglers Cove Cottages, you’re close to cosy corners and festive food.

  • The Basset Arms (Tregea Hill, Portreath) is offering Christmas and New Year dining, festive party nights and special breaks for the season.
  • The POD Cafe on the seafront has Christmas party nights (5th, 6th, 12th, 13th December) with live music and festive menus.
  • After a fresh winter walk, sliding into a warm pub with local ales, a roaring fire and festive fare is one of the great Cornish pleasures.

While Portreath itself may not have huge large-scale festive fireworks, it has enough charm and nearby events to give you a proper Christmas feel.

Portreath usually has a Christmas lights switch-on, carol singing and local community gathering in early December.

There is also a tradition of a Boxing Day sea-dip at Portreath Beach, our cottages are the perfect viewpoint too!
