There’s a common misconception that Cornwall is only at its best when the sun is shining.
And while we’re certainly not going to complain about blue skies, warm beaches and long summer evenings, there’s something rather lovely about Cornwall on a rainy day too.
The landscape looks moodier. The beaches are quieter. The sea can be wonderfully dramatic. And, perhaps best of all, you have the perfect excuse to slow down, explore somewhere new, eat something delicious and eventually retreat to the cosy comfort of your cottage.
So, if you wake up at Smugglers Cove Cottages to the sound of rain on the window, don’t panic. Here’s how we’d spend the perfect rainy day in Cornwall:
8:30am – Take your time over breakfast
First things first: don’t rush.
One of the best things about being on holiday is that you don’t have to leap out of bed and follow a strict itinerary.
Put the kettle on, make a proper breakfast and enjoy it slowly. With sea views? Even better! Watch the weather roll across the Cornish landscape while you decide what the day might bring.
And remember, rain in Cornwall doesn’t necessarily mean rain all day. A wet morning can quite easily turn into a bright afternoon, so there’s no need to write the day off.
10:00am – Head somewhere interesting
Once you’re ready to venture out, Cornwall has plenty of attractions that are perfect for a rainy day.
If you’re looking for something entertaining for all ages, Cornwall Gold is a great option, with plenty to discover whatever the weather is doing outside.
We’ve written more about Cornwall Gold here.
Or, if you’re heading towards Padstow, the National Lobster Hatchery is another fascinating stop. It’s a chance to learn more about Cornwall’s marine life and the work being done to protect and restore native lobster populations.

Other rainy-day options include Cornwall’s museums, historic houses, galleries and aquariums, and don’t overlook the smaller independent attractions. Some of the most memorable holiday discoveries happen when you simply follow your curiosity.
12:30pm – Stop for a proper Cornish lunch
After a morning of exploring, you’ll have earned lunch.
And this is Cornwall, so we’d recommend making the most of it.
Find a cosy pub, café or restaurant and settle in for something hearty. Fresh local seafood is an obvious choice if it’s on the menu, but so is a good Cornish pasty, homemade soup or a generous cream tea.
In fact, a rainy day might be the perfect excuse to linger over lunch rather than rushing on to the next activity.
Holiday rule: there is no such thing as too much coffee when it’s raining.
2:00pm – Browse, wander and discover
If the rain has eased, this is a great time to explore one of Cornwall’s pretty towns or harbours.
Browse independent shops, galleries and local makers, pick up something you wouldn’t find at home and take your time.
Cornwall has a brilliant creative community, so look beyond the usual souvenir shops. You might find locally made ceramics, artwork, jewellery, food products or something beautiful for your home.
And if it’s still raining heavily? That’s fine too.
Choose another indoor attraction, find a gallery or simply find somewhere warm and dry to browse for an hour.
There’s no prize for getting soaked.
3:30pm – Coffee and cake
By mid-afternoon, it’s time for another essential part of the itinerary: coffee and cake.
Find a cosy café, order something warm and watch the rain outside.
There’s something particularly satisfying about being tucked up somewhere warm while the Cornish weather does its thing outside.
And if you’re travelling with children, this is also a good opportunity to refuel before heading back to the cottage.
5:00pm – Back to the cottage
Now it’s time to return to Smugglers Cove Cottages.
This is where a rainy day in Cornwall really comes into its own.
Kick off your shoes, put the heating on if you need it, make a cup of tea and get comfortable.
If you’ve got a sea view, settle in and watch the changing light across the water. Stormy skies over the Cornish coast can be spectacular – and you don’t need to be standing on a beach to appreciate them.
Sometimes the best view of the day is the one you can enjoy from the comfort of your own cottage.
7:00pm – Make an evening of it
There’s no need to head back out.
Put together an easy dinner, open a bottle of something nice and settle in for a cosy evening.
Play a board game. Read the book you’ve been meaning to finish. Put on a film. Or simply sit and listen to the rain.
After all, isn’t this partly what a cottage holiday is about?
Time to do very little.
Cornwall isn’t just a summer destination
One of the best things about Cornwall is that every season brings something different.
Sunny days might mean swimming, beach picnics and long coastal walks, but rainy days have their own charm.
They’re slower. Cosier. Often quieter.
And they give you the chance to experience a different side of Cornwall – from its museums and galleries to its independent shops, cafés, restaurants and attractions.
So, if the forecast is looking a little grey during your stay at Smugglers Cove Cottages, don’t worry.
Grab your waterproof, leave the weather app alone for a few hours and go exploring.
And when you’ve had enough?
Come back to the cottage, put the kettle on and enjoy Cornwall from the warm and cosy side of the window.
Because sometimes, a rainy day is exactly what a Cornish holiday needs.
